Clearer rules are needed, Eagle Ford Task Force says

Operators in the Eagle Ford Shale need greater clarity of the rules to ensure they can prosper and protect the environment, the founder of the Eagle Ford Task Force said Wednesday.

“Everybody on the regulatory side and the industry side wants to keep up with the technology,” Railroad Commissioner David Porter said.

Without clear and streamlined rules, “we can slow things down,” he said, “and that could harm the environment and the industry’s ability to move forward.”

Porter, who founded the 24-member Eagle Ford Task Force last year, set Wednesday’s meeting to bring members up to date on rules for commercial disposal wells, storage pits and flaring, or releasing gases into the atmosphere.

When drillers extract oil and natural gas, those products are accompanied by saltwater and fluids, including chemicals used in hydraulic fracturing. The waste may be disposed of by returning it into the reservoir where it originated or injected into rock formations that don’t produce oil and gas, according to the commission’s website.
